Insider Info

Additional Information

In the United States, students need a two-year associate's degree from either a community college or technical school. The first year introduces the student to basic medical terminology and health care. The second year includes theory courses in fields ranging from mental health and gerontology to pediatrics. It also includes practical clinical experience.

Once you have your degree, you then have to take a state licensing exam and work to get on-the-job experience.

Extra Requirements

Licensure requires completing an accredited occupational therapy assistant education program, fieldwork, and passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. Other credentials for occupational therapy assistants are available, such as those offered by the American Occupational Therapy Association. Optional certifications may demonstrate that an assistant has particular knowledge, skills, or abilities in a specialized area of practice, such as low vision.
